In-depth analysis

EO is pure European auteur cinema: a visual fable that follows a donkey's pilgrimage across contemporary Europe. Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski crafts a contemplative narrative where the camera literally adopts the animal's perspective, transforming urban and rural landscapes into strange and revealing sensory experiences. The film functions as a mirror of the human condition: the donkey, which never loses its innocence, encounters people who oscillate between kindness and cruelty. There is no ideological agenda or anthropological deconstruction — there is, instead, a silent meditation on suffering, the dignity of creation, and the modern world's indifference to the vulnerable. The necessary warning: several scenes of animal mistreatment are difficult to watch (beatings, exploitation, slaughterhouse sequences), though they never revel in violence for morbid pleasure. This is disturbing content with narrative purpose, not entertainment. It requires emotional maturity to process. Not suitable for children due to the rawness of some images, but valuable for adult viewers capable of contemplation and willing to embrace an unconventional cinematic experience.
