In-depth analysis
Eat Drink Man Woman is one of Ang Lee's most representative works before his international acclaim. The film crafts a generational portrait where food functions as a language of affection that the protagonist cannot express with words. The Taiwanese director understands that family bonds are not arenas of oppression to be destroyed, but complex spheres where loyalty and growth coexist with tension and misunderstanding. The father figure —a widowed chef who prepares elaborate banquets every Sunday— embodies legitimate authority, seeking the good of his daughters without knowing how to bridge the emotional distance. The screenplay honestly explores the life decisions of three adult women without celebrating radical individualism: each seeks her own path, but the film never suggests that emancipation requires breaking with family or tradition. The culinary preparation scenes carry contemplative weight: the care in every detail is a metaphor for silent paternal love. For parents, this work invites reflection on how we express affection and how we accompany our children's decisions without imposing or abandoning. A robust choice for families with older children.
