In-depth analysis
Aquarius is Brazilian auteur cinema that constructs a complex portrait of a 65-year-old woman who defends her home against real estate speculation. The film functions as an allegory of resistance against the destruction of memory and the family bonds that a house embodies. Clara is not a passive victim: she is a cultured woman, mother, grandmother, who lives her old age with fullness and autonomy. Kleber Mendonça Filho's direction is unhurried and contemplative, with cinematography that transforms the Aquarius building into another character in the story. The problem for families lies not in the underlying message — which is legitimate and even moving — but in the form: the film includes scenes of explicit sex and full nudity as part of the protagonist's daily life. This content is clearly adult and not suitable for minors. There is no deconstructive ideological agenda, but the level of sexual content makes it a work exclusively for mature adults with well-formed judgment. Not recommended for family viewing.
