Devastating realism about illegal abortion; extreme rawness without a Christian moral framework.
In-depth analysis
Cristian Mungiu constructs a claustrophobic narrative that follows in real-time the process of a clandestine abortion under the Ceaușescu regime. The film does not celebrate abortion — in fact, it shows it in all its traumatic and morally devastating dimension. The camera does not lie: the aborted fetus appears on screen with stark realism, and the scene where the abortionist demands sex as additional payment is profoundly disturbing. The problem is not that the work glorifies abortion, but that it presents it within a framework where it seems the only viable option for the protagonists, without offering a perspective that affirms the sacredness of human life from conception. Moral ambiguity is characteristic of European auteur cinema, but for a family formed in the Christian tradition, the absence of a clear ethical counterweight is a void that cannot be ignored. The film demands extreme maturity and well-formed judgment. It is not propaganda, but neither is it innocuous: it shows the horror of abortion without naming it as the evil that it is. Only suitable for adults with solid discernment.
