Normalizes the redefinition of family under a moving adoption story.
In-depth analysis
The film introduces among the adoptive families in the program a same-sex couple, presented without question as a normal part of the landscape. This element, though secondary in screen time, establishes as a fait accompli the redefinition of the family. The narrative strategy is effective: under the emotional cover of a genuinely moving story about the beauty of adoption, the normalization of a family structure contrary to the natural order is subtly introduced.
That said, Instant Family possesses genuine virtues: it celebrates the marital commitment of Pete and Ellie, portrays parenthood as a gift and sacrifice, honestly depicts the challenges of caring for traumatized minors, and values family above individual comfort. The script avoids cheap sentimentality and builds characters with genuine arcs. The direction trusts that the viewer can be moved without artifice. But the presence of ideological content — however brief — is PRISMA's raison d'être: to detect what passes unnoticed by the viewer. A film with such narrative richness and solid values contaminates its message by including this element. Not recommended for families.
