An adult screwball comedy that treats adultery with comic lightness.
In-depth analysis
Almodóvar's international debut is a vertiginous farce that transforms emotional chaos into visual spectacle. Pepa, abandoned by her married lover, watches her life unravel as a parade of characters—a hysterical friend, the lover's ex-wife fresh out of the asylum, Shiite terrorists—invade her attic. The film is a comedy of errors in the Spanish tradition, featuring deliberately exaggerated performances and a saturated color palette that underscore the absurdity of the situation. Adultery is treated with comic lightness, without explicit condemnation, yet also without glorification: Iván is clearly a scoundrel, and Pepa suffers the consequences of having trusted him. The resolution shows the protagonist choosing dignity over obsession, leaving behind the chaos he represents. It is adult cinema that requires maturity to distinguish between laughing at a situation and condoning the characters' moral choices. The language is adult, and the violence, purely comic. Not recommended for minors nor for those seeking affirmation of conjugal virtues.
