Synopsis

With his best friend Luca away at school, Alberto is enjoying his new life in Portorosso working alongside Massimo—the imposing, tattooed, one-armed fisherman of few words—who's quite possibly the coolest human in the entire world as far as Alberto is concerned. He wants more than anything to impress his mentor, but it's easier said than done.

Verdict

A simple tale of learning and work that celebrates effort and mentorship.

In-depth analysis

This brief Pixar short film constructs with narrative economy a story of learning and kinship. Alberto, far from his friend Luca, discovers in Massimo an authority figure he genuinely admires. The script leverages the contrast between Alberto's youthful enthusiasm and his mentor's reticence to explore a classic theme: the natural desire to impress those we respect. The direction opts for simplicity: there are no villains or forced conflicts, only the honest difficulty of learning a trade and earning the respect of someone who knows more than us.

For parents, it is a work that invites conversation about the value of work well done, humility in learning, and the importance of role models. Massimo, with his imposing physical presence yet serene demeanor, embodies a positive masculinity that children's cinema needs: firm without being hostile, capable without boasting. A brief yet solid piece that celebrates responsibility and effort without postmodern irony. Ideal for the whole family.
