Synopsis
Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a curse and won't leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the curse that haunts him?
Verdict
Graphic anime violence with a positive message about trauma and friendship.
In-depth analysis
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 constructs a coming-of-age narrative where the protagonist learns that trauma need not destructively define his life. The premise is solid: Yuta bears a curse born from the tragic death of his childhood friend, and must learn to transform that burden into a force that protects others. The message regarding the healing of trauma, loyal friendship, and sacrifice for others is genuine and well-executed.
However, the work achieves this message through graphic and disturbing violence that clearly exceeds the PG-13 standard. Scenes include detailed dismemberments, flaying, copious blood, and grotesque monsters that can be distressing even for adolescents. The anime's aesthetic partially softens the impact, but the level of visual cruelty is considerable. The fantastical worldbuilding (sorcerers, curses, cursed energy) is a narrative fantasy device, not a promotion of occultism. Parents must weigh whether the formative value of the story justifies exposing their children to this level of graphic violence. Recommended only for mature audiences with developed discernment.
