In-depth analysis
The film adapts the ABBA musical with contagious energy and catchy songs, but its moral undercurrent proves problematic. The story portrays Donna's intimate relationships with three men over a few days as something natural and without consequence, with scenes in bed and explicit comments about the body. Although these relationships occur off-screen, the tone celebrates them as part of a carefree youth. Furthermore, it includes subtle nods to same-sex attraction through jokes and references in the credits. The baptism at the end adds a positive spiritual touch, but it does not compensate for the relaxed view of sexuality. Alcohol appears consistently at parties and gatherings without question. For parents, the work demands discernment because it blends musical entertainment with a normalization of behaviors that run counter to common sense regarding commitment and family. Artistic quality does not nullify the underlying message.
